Have you ever felt refreshed gazing out over the ocean? The sight, smell and sound of the waves crashing and the surf splashing releases feel good hormones, leaving you relaxed and joyful.
What causes this wonderful sensation? Scientists have looked into the effects of sitting, overlooking the sea, a lake or a river, but there are no definitive results about why it feels so good. Some scientists say brain activity decreases when people look at pictures of the sea. Put simply, the ocean relaxes you.
Anyone who has lived by the ocean will know about the soothing sound of the waves. A behavioural scientist at the University of Pennsylvania says that the predictable and slow whoosh, juxtaposed with silence in between the waves breaking, soothes people. We’ve noticed this at Embudu Village.
Wake up before dawn. Go to the beach and let the waves gently lap your feet. Close your eyes. Sink your toes into the soft white sand. And then, listen. It’s a great way to rejuvenate. The waves have traveled halfway across the world to reach you. Take a breath, and let the ocean heal you.
